Birth of child/ren

A person – parent shall become entitled to the following state social benefits at birth of a child/ children:

  • Benefit at child birth
  • Child allowance
  • Parent benefit

Benefit at child birth

Entitled person shall file the Application for benefit at child birth at the Office of Labor, Social Affairs and Family, Department of the State Social Benefits according to his permanent address. The application form is available at the Register of Birth in the child´s birth location concurrently with the child´s birth certificate.  

Benefits at child birth refers to an one-time benefit, currently paid in amount Eur 829,86 in case of child from first to third childbirth, who see out 28 days and Eur 151,37 in case of child from fourth and more childbirth, who see out 28 days or in case of child from first to third childbirth who died before 28 days

If more than one child is born concurrently, each child will be subject to the benefit. Amount of benefit in case of concurrent birth of two or more children who have survived 28 days will be increased by Eur 75,69.

Primarily the child´s mother is entitled person to exercise right for this benefit. Father will be entitled only in cases specified by law, namely if the child´s mother died, was declared as wanted by the Police or if the child was entrusted in the father´s care. 

Entitlement terms:

-          child´s birth

-          applicant´s permanent address in the Slovak territory

If a child was born outside Slovakia, the child´s birth certificate from special register of birth is not necessary; translation of the child´s birth document issued in the country of birth will be sufficient.   

If a child was born in non-EU country, the mother shall prove that she had participated on mandatory public insurance scheme or voluntary health insurance scheme in Slovakia at least for 12 consecutive calendar months before the delivery.

Entitlement to child birth benefit and to additional payment to benefit should be claimed within 6 months from the child´s birth.

Parent benefit

The state provides benefit to the parents or substitute parents to increased expenses associated with the care of concurrently born three or more children or the twins/ more children born within two years. The parent benefit shall be provided once per year per a child, for the 1st time upon survived 1st year of life and for the last time upon survived 15th year of age of children.

The benefit shall be provided to the parents in the amount per capita Eur 110,36.

Child allowance

Child allowance shall be claimed by the entitled person at the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, Department of the State Social Benefits according to the applicant´s permanent address.

The following person is entitled to claim the child allowance:

-          parent of a dependent child (based on mutual agreement), 

-          person to whose care the child has been entrusted based on valid court decision,

-          adult dependent child with entitlement to maintenance from both parents,

-          adult dependent child that contracted marriage or whose marriage ceased.

Dependent child refers to a child from his birth until completion of mandatory school attendance but at the longest till the 25th year of age, who has prepared to the future occupation, studying at high school, college or university in full enrollment.

Entitlement to child allowance relates to any and all born child/ren but to those taking care in the facility because of executed court decision on ordered institutional care, preliminary injunction or decision on imposed protection education or educational injunction. Nor will the child allowance be provided if the entitled person and dependent child stay in a country that is other than EU country, EEC Treaty country or Swiss Confederation and while in such country, the person has not been subject to public health insurance scheme of voluntary health insurance scheme in Slovakia.

Application for child allowance [ PDF] shall be attached with the child´s birth certificate and a photo-copy for comparison purposes, the applicant´s citizen ID card, confirmation of an elementary, high school or college/ university if attended by the child (confirmation is available here) . Should the entitled person and dependent child stay in a non-EU country, the application shall be attached with confirmation on the applicant’s inclusion in the health insurance scheme in Slovakia. 

 Current child allowance refers to Eur 23,52.

Child allowance entitlement per a calendar month shall cease upon lapsed 6 months from the last day in a month of entitlement. Thus, the applicant for child allowance can claim the allowance retrospectively for max. 6 months.

 Additional payment to child allowance

Additional payment to child allowance represents the state allowance paid by the state to the entitled person for the child education and nutrition. This allowance isn´t subject to the tax bonus.

 Additional payment to child allowance can be claimed by parent or substitute parent who is a beneficiary of the child allowance.

 Only a parent meeting the following requirements can apply for additional payment to child allowance:

  • Pension beneficiary (old-age, premature old-age, disablement (more than 70%), retirement pension after reached retirement age or pension payment from a foreign country),
  • Not performing any earning activity,
  • Not being awarded with tax bonus to dependent child to whom he is a child allowance beneficiary.

 These terms apply to:

-          parent applying for additional payment to child allowance,

-          the other parent, or

-          the child´s parent s spouse not being the child´s parent.

All above-mentioned terms shall be met by both assessed persons who shall not perform earning activity at the same time. If a child has been entrusted to the only parent´s care, meeting the terms for additional payment to child allowance will not be examined at the other parent.  

Current amount of the additional payment to child allowance refers to Eur 11,02.

Applicant for additional payment to child allowance can retrospectively claim for the allowance max. for period of 6 months.

Parent benefit

Parent benefit shall be claimed by the entitled person at the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, Department of the State Social Benefits according to the applicant´s permanent address.

Current amount of the parent benefit refers to Eur 203,20.

In case of concurrently born two or more children (twins, triplets and so on.), parent benefit amount is increased by 25% per each concurrently born child; e.g. parent benefit provided for care of twins belongs to parent in total amount Eur 254.

Child parent is a person entitled to claim for the parent benefit (based on both parents´ agreement).

Information obtained from the Social Insurance Company on maternity allowance is required to claim the parent benefit  since the maternity allowance conditions entitlement to the parent benefit.

Entitlement to the parent benefit per a calendar month shall cease upon lapsed six months from the last day of a month for which the benefit was paid. It means, applicant for parent benefit can retrospectively claim for the benefit max. for period of 6 months.
